The American University of Nigeria (AUN) was established in
2003 by Nigeria’s former Vice President His Excellency, Atiku Abubakar along
with other local and international statesmen and academic leaders. The
institution was conceived as Africa’s first Development University. Its mission
is to pioneer service learning and build leaders who will be prepared to tackle
societal concerns. Located in Yola, Adamawa State, the University is a
world-class career-oriented institution missioned to be an agent of change in
the development of the region. AUN has a strong commitment to providing the
skills and the leadership essential to solving the continent’s critical social
and economic problems. The university offers an American-style education
modelled after the curriculum of American universities with corresponding
approaches to teaching and students assessment. The first entering class of 124
students and 20 professors was enrolled in September 2005. The University
started on temporary buildings at the AUN Academy located directly opposite the
AUN campus. In seven years, AUN is fast becoming a model for other universities
in Nigeria and West Africa.
We are recruiting to fill the following position:
Job Title: Senior Accountant (Reconciliation)
Location: Adamawa
Responsibilities
- This position leads a team of reconciliation accountants who perform various accounting duties, primarily focusing on performing various reconciliations including Bank and Balance Sheet account reconciliations. The position also prepares various monthly reports, month-end close responsibilities and analyzing the Balance Sheet.
- Process and review accounting transactions that support AUN core operations and/or non-consolidated entities so that financial information in the General Ledger is timely, accurate, and complete.
- Develop knowledge related to AUN accounting structure, including both balance sheet and income statement accounts.
- Maintain the Chart of Accounts in accordance with AUN Financial Policies and Procedures to support business needs.
- Analyze the AUN Balance Sheet through timely reconciliation of balance sheet accounts, funds, transfers, and other account analyses as necessary.
- Prepare journal entries to record or adjust accounting transactions in accordance with IFRS and AUN Financial Policies/Procedures.
- Gain understanding of key internal controls, policies and procedures related to transactions to monitor and enforce compliance.
- Team with colleagues in AUN or other external customers to resolve accounting issues, re-design business or system processes or to support other projects.
- Adhere to a calendar of accounting activities to ensure that all transactions are processed and by appropriate deadlines.
- Produce or assist in producing AUN financial reports for a wide variety of customers and stakeholders, including those internal to or external to Harvard University.
- Document procedures related to job duties and suggest improvements to existing processes.
- Identify potential savings, cost drivers or billing discrepancies with extensive follow-up
- Work with others in the Financial Operations team on special projects.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business or related field
- Must possess a professional certification in ICAN, ANAN or ACCA
- A minimum of 2 years’ of working knowledge of large ERP System on a daily basis (OpenERP and Banner preferable)
- 5 years’ work experience in Accounting or Finance with demonstrated exposure to following areas: accounting, reconciliations, project management, financial analysis, research, procurement, and invoicing in medium to large organization
- Experience working knowledge of large ERP System on a daily basis (OpenERP and Banner preferable)
- Proficiency in the use of word processing and spreadsheet software including Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel
- Highly detail oriented and attention to detail
- Exceptional interpersonal communication skills
- High degree of personal integrity
